Hylotelephium ewersii is one of those quietly dependable plants that never asks for much and always delivers. A low, spreading mat-former that hugs the ground like it's bracing against a Cascade Range wind, this little stonecrop tops out at about 4 inches tall and spreads out to 6 inches wide — modest in stature, mighty in character. The round, blue-gray leaves are arranged in overlapping pairs along trailing stems, giving the whole plant a sort of tidy, sculptural quality that looks intentional even when you've done absolutely nothing to maintain it.
Come late summer, it sends up clusters of soft pink flowers that pollinators love — a nice late-season bonus when a lot of the garden is already winding down. It's cold-hardy down to Zone 4, which means it'll laugh at a hard frost without flinching. Plant it in a rock garden, tuck it between stepping stones, or let it spill over a retaining wall — it handles dry summers with ease and drains fast enough to shrug off our wet winters. Full sun is its happy place, and decent drainage is really the only thing it asks for. Give it those two things and you've basically set it free. Hylotelephium ewersii is the kind of plant that makes rock gardening look effortless, which, frankly, is exactly what we all need more of around here.
