The name translates from German as 'rose carpet,' and Hylotelephium ewersii 'Rosenteppich' earns that description reliably. It's a low, spreading mat-former in the ewersii mold — those familiar rounded, blue-gray leaves arranged in pairs along trailing stems — but selected specifically for the quality and density of its rosy-pink flower display. When it blooms in late summer, the flat-topped clusters cover the plant thoroughly, creating that carpet of pink the name promises. It's a satisfying, full-season performer: good foliage interest from early spring, then a proper flower show when a lot of the garden is already past its peak.
Zone 4 hardy and completely suited to PNW conditions, 'Rosenteppich' handles dry summers and wet winters with the easy resilience of its ewersii parentage. Full sun brings out the deepest blue-gray in the foliage and the richest pink in the flowers. Rock gardens, stepping stone edges, low retaining wall tops, and sunny gravel beds are all natural placements. It's a miniature version of an already excellent species, and pairs well with Hylotelephium ewersii both in the garden or in a container. In the late-summer PNW garden, a mat of 'Rosenteppich' in full flower is a small and reliable pleasure.
