The name promises something atmospheric and Hylotelephium 'Sunset Cloud' delivers. The foliage is a rich chocolate-purple with blue-green overtones — a complex, shifting color that reads differently in morning overcast than it does in afternoon sun, giving it a quality that's particularly well-suited to the Pacific Northwest's varied light. Pink flowers emerge in late summer, contrasting warmly against all that dark foliage in the way that the low September sun contrasts against the Cascade ridgeline. It's one of those plants that makes you stop and reconsider where you've been putting your late-season interest.
Zone 4 hardy and adaptable to PNW conditions on both sides of the mountains. Like most dark-leaved Hylotelephium selections, full sun brings out the richest coloration — shade will push it toward a more ordinary purple-green that loses the complexity. Good drainage is essential, especially on the wet west side through winter. The dried flower heads add structure after the growing season ends. If you're building a late-summer garden that does something more interesting than simply waiting for frost, 'Sunset Cloud' belongs in it.
