The Hylotelephium telephium cultivars are the dark horses of the stonecrop world — tall, dramatic, and decidedly purple — and Hylotelephium telephium 'Emperor's Wave' is a strong entry in that category. The foliage is a deep plum-burgundy that holds well through the season, carried on upright stems to 15 to 18 inches. Late summer brings flowers in a soft rosy pink that contrasts beautifully against the dark foliage — the same purple-and-pink combination that shows up repeatedly in this group and never seems to get old. It has a presence in the border that's noticeably more formal and architectural than mat-forming groundcover sedums.
Zone 4 hardy and adaptable to both sides of the Cascades, 'Emperor's Wave' is at its color-richest in full sun — shade pushes the foliage toward a greener, less dramatic tone. Well-drained soil is essential; wet winter roots are the main risk in the Pacific Northwest. It pairs naturally with silver-gray companions where the dark foliage can really register, or with warm golden late-season perennials for a combination that captures the mood of a PNW autumn. The seed heads dry nicely and add winter structure. A strong performer worth growing.
