Petrosedum ochroleucum 'Centaureus'

Small in stature but big on presence, Petrosedum ochroleucum 'Centaureus' is a fine-textured mat-forming groundcover that earns its keep without making a fuss. It grows just 2 to 3 inches tall and spreads outward in a low, dense carpet of needle-like foliage — the kind of plant that quietly fills in a gap and makes you wonder why you ever tried to grow anything more demanding in that spot. The pale yellow flowers are soft and understated, adding a gentle warmth without overwhelming the subtle green texture of the mat below.

This one is a natural fit for gravel gardens, dry stone walls, and those sun-baked patches along a driveway edge where nothing else seems to want to grow. It's hardy to Zone 5, handles dry Pacific Northwest summers without complaint, and drains well enough to survive our soggy shoulder seasons. The fine texture is a nice contrast to chunkier rock garden companions — tuck it between larger sedums, ornamental grasses, or low-growing conifers and it'll knit the whole composition together. 'Centaureus' won't shout for attention, but once you plant it and walk away, you'll come back in a season to find it doing exactly what you hoped — spreading steadily, looking tidy, and asking for nothing. That's a pretty good deal by any measure, and especially by PNW rock garden standards.
