Phedimus aizoon is the plant that makes a rock garden feel genuinely lived-in and established. One of the classic spreading yellow-flowered groundcover stonecrops, it forms a vigorous mat of upright stems with toothed, pointed leaves — more decidedly leaf-shaped than many succulents, which gives it an almost semi-herbaceous quality. In late spring and early summer it covers itself in bright yellow flowers that attract pollinators with competitive enthusiasm. The whole plant has a robust, slightly wild quality that feels appropriate in a naturalistic rock garden setting.
Hardy to Zone 4 and spreading reliably in PNW conditions, P. aizoon is adaptable enough to handle the range of conditions on both sides of the Cascades. Full sun is ideal for the most prolific flowering, though it tolerates partial shade better than many of its relations. It's a strong grower that covers ground efficiently — appropriate for larger rock garden areas or hillside plantings where coverage is the goal. Pair it with mat-forming groundcovers at a lower height for a layered composition, or plant it among rocks where its slightly upright habit provides middle-level structure. Reliable, vigorous, and genuinely attractive — sometimes that's exactly the combination the garden needs.
