The name means "little evergreen" in German, and Phedimus hybridus 'Immergrünchen' lives up to it completely. This vigorous, mat-forming groundcover hangs onto its scalloped, bright green leaves through the winter — a real comfort in the gray months when the rest of the garden looks like it gave up. It grows 6 to 8 inches tall and spreads 15 to 20 inches wide, filling in quickly without being obnoxious about it. The scalloped leaf edges give it a slightly refined, detailed look compared to some of the needle-leaved sedums, almost like a tiny woodland plant that decided it preferred the sunny rock garden life.
Early summer brings cheerful yellow flowers that cover the plant and attract pollinators before a lot of other things have even hit their stride. It's hardy to Zone 4 and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil — a reliable performer that asks very little and delivers consistently. This is a great choice for slopes, banks, and larger rock garden areas where you need a plant that covers ground efficiently and stays presentable year-round. If 'Immergrünchen' were a person, it'd be that quietly capable crew member who just gets things done — no fuss, no drama, just solid results every season.
