Take the reliable performance of Phedimus kamtschaticus and add a layer of visual interest, and you get Phedimus kamtschaticus 'Variegatus' — the same tough, adaptable groundcover with leaves edged in cream and flushed with pink at the margins. The variegation is subtle in overcast conditions but comes alive in good light, giving the whole mat a warm, textured glow. Late spring to early summer brings yellow flowers that complement the warm-toned variegation nicely. It has a cottage-garden charm that works in both formal and naturalistic settings.
Zone 3 hardy and as tough as its species parent, 'Variegatus' handles the full range of PNW conditions without complaint. The variegation is at its most colorful in full sun — shade reduces both the cream margin and the pink flush, pushing the plant toward a more standard green. Well-drained soil prevents the root issues that can afflict variegated plants in wet conditions. It's slightly less vigorous than the straight species, which can actually be an advantage in smaller rock garden compositions where a more restrained spreader is welcome. Use it where the variegation can be appreciated up close — along path edges, at the front of a rock garden, or in a container where the detail registers.
