Most Phedimus spurius selections lean into the drama of dark foliage or vivid flowers. Phedimus spurius 'Fools Gold' takes a different approach: the foliage is a warm, golden-chartreuse that glows with reflected sunlight and makes neighboring plants look brighter by proximity. The leaves have that familiar scalloped spurius shape, and the pink flowers that appear in summer make a warm contrast against the yellow-green foliage. It's an unusual choice in a group that tends toward the red and dark end of the spectrum, and that's exactly why it's worth growing.
Zone 3 hardy and performing reliably in PNW gardens across the full range of conditions. The golden foliage color is brightest in full sun — shade will push it toward a more standard green and reduce the whole point of growing it. Well-drained soil is the standard requirement. Use it to brighten rock garden compositions, or as a contrast element against dark-leaved companions where the yellow-green makes the purple look deeper and the purple makes the gold look warmer. The rock garden doesn't always need more dark foliage; sometimes it just needs something that catches the light and glows.
