Not every rock garden sedum needs dark leaves and vivid flowers to earn its place, and Phedimus spurius 'Summer Snow' makes that case cleanly. The foliage is a rich, fresh green — the standard spurius scalloped shape — and the flowers that arrive in midsummer are pure white. Clean, simple, elegant. In a rock garden filled with crimson, burgundy, and gold, a sweep of white-flowering sedum has the effect of a breath of fresh air — everything around it looks more saturated and vivid by contrast.
Zone 3 hardy and as tough as the spurius group generally is, 'Summer Snow' performs reliably in PNW conditions. Full sun is ideal but it tolerates some shade without losing its clean look. Well-drained soil is the standard ask. It works particularly well in mixed plantings where white flowers create visual separation between bolder colors — between 'Dragon's Blood' and 'Voodoo,' or between 'Angelina' and 'Blue Spruce,' the white acts as a visual reset. In the Pacific Northwest garden, that role is more valuable than it sounds. Sometimes the most important thing in a composition isn't the loudest element but the quiet one that makes everything else make sense.
