Prometheum Chrysanthum

Prometheum chrysanthum is the kind of plant that makes you stop and reconsider what you thought you knew about sedums. It forms tidy, architectural rosettes of pale green to silvery foliage that have a clean, almost sculptural quality — the kind of plant you'd find clinging to a rocky cliff in the mountains of Turkey or the Caucasus, which is more or less where it comes from. In summer it pushes up stems of soft yellow flowers that contrast nicely against the cool-toned foliage. It grows to about 5 inches tall and has that contemplative, gem-like presence that rock garden enthusiasts go absolutely weak in the knees for.

Here's what makes it genuinely interesting: Prometheum can be monocarpic, meaning individual rosettes may bloom once and then die — but the plant offsets freely and new rosettes take over, so the colony persists. It's a bit like watching a relay race in slow motion. Hardy to Zone 6 and suited to PNW conditions in well-drained, gritty soil and full sun, it's a great conversation piece for troughs, hypertufa containers, and detailed rock gardens where you want something a little different from the standard lineup. If you're the kind of gardener who gets excited about botanical quirks and obscure genera with interesting life histories, Prometheum chrysanthum will absolutely scratch that itch.
