Green Ice

Sedum album 'Green Ice'

Sometimes you don't want drama. Sometimes you just want a clean, fresh-looking groundcover that stays tidy, minds its business, and looks good twelve months a year. That's Sedum album 'Green Ice'. The foliage is a clear, cool, icy green — not blue-gray, not chartreuse, just a clean fresh green that reads as bright and crisp in the garden. In summer it produces small white flowers that add a soft texture without overwhelming the foliage. It stays low and spreading, forming a smooth mat that looks intentional and neat even when you haven't touched it all season.

Hardy to Zone 4 and well-suited to the mild winters of western Washington and Oregon, 'Green Ice' holds its color through our gray months without turning brown or going fully dormant — a genuine asset on the wet side of the Cascades where some sedums can look a bit ragged by February. Full sun is ideal but it'll tolerate a bit of shade. Well-drained soil is the standard ask. It works beautifully between stepping stones, along path edges, in rock gardens, or as a low-maintenance filler between larger shrubs. If you've got a spot that needs something clean and reliable that won't require a second thought once it's established, 'Green Ice' is an easy answer. Understated, practical, and genuinely pretty — three things that never go out of style.
