Sedum dasyphyllum 'Himalayan Skies'

If you're the kind of gardener who's already got a few Sedum dasyphyllum cultivars and wants another, Sedum dasyphyllum 'Himalayan Skies' is ready for you. And if you're new to the hairy stonecrop world entirely, this is a beautiful place to start. The foliage leans toward a blue-gray that's cool and almost misty in quality — appropriately sky-like, given the name — and the fine glandular hairs give it that signature velvety texture the species is known for. In bloom it produces white flowers that are small and understated, perfectly in proportion with the rest of the plant.

It forms soft, cloud-like mats at a miniature scale that look exceptional in troughs, detailed rock gardens, or as a filler between larger stone pieces in a garden wall. Hardy to Zone 5 and well-suited to PNW conditions with good drainage, it handles our mild winters without much drama and appreciates the long, dry summers that the east side of the Cascades and south-facing west-side gardens can provide. Full sun brings out the best color and keeps the growth compact and tight. 'Himalayan Skies' has a quiet, contemplative quality — not a showstopper from a distance, but genuinely lovely up close and in person. The kind of plant you grow because you appreciate small, beautiful things done well.
