Sedum hirsutum

If regular sedums feel too ordinary, Sedum hirsutum var. baeticum is ready to expand your horizons. This hairy stonecrop from Spain and Portugal has a distinctly tactile quality — the rosettes are covered in fine, sticky, glandular hairs that give the plant a soft, almost fuzzy texture that you absolutely have to touch. The leaves form tidy, plump rosettes that cluster together over time, and the white to pale pink flowers that appear in summer are small and charming. It has the look of something you'd find wedged into a limestone cliff in Andalusia, which is more or less accurate.

Hardy to around Zone 5 to 8, it does best in the Pacific Northwest in conditions that favor its natural habitat — excellent drainage is truly essential, lean gritty soil, and full sun. Our wet winters are the main challenge for plants from dry Mediterranean climates, so raised rock garden beds, gravel mulch, and sharply amended soil help it thrive on the west side of the Cascades. It's particularly well-suited to trough gardens and hypertufa containers where drainage can be controlled precisely. The hairy texture is genuinely unusual in the sedum world and makes it a standout in any detailed rock garden collection. Botanically interesting, visually distinctive, and just different enough from the standard sedum lineup to be exciting.
