Sedum polytrichoides 'Chocolate ball'

Trough gardeners, this one's yours. Sedum polytrichoides 'Chocolate Ball' does something no other common sedum does — it forms tight, bun-shaped mounds of moss-like foliage that turn a deep, rich chocolate-brown in winter. In summer the mounds are green and textured, almost feathery in their fine scale, with small yellow flowers appearing above the foliage. Then the cold arrives, and the whole thing shifts to brown — genuine, warm chocolate-brown — that looks intentional and beautiful in a way that most winter dormancy simply doesn't.

Hardy to Zone 4 and suited to the Pacific Northwest's range of conditions, it's a well-behaved plant that stays in its lane and does what you put it there to do. The tight, bun-shaped habit means it's naturally suited to trough gardens and hypertufa container plantings where precise scale and form matter. In a detailed rock garden it works as a textural contrast to flat mat-formers and rosette-forming plants. Full sun and good drainage keep it compact and healthy. The winter color transformation is the real hook — when the rest of the garden is gray and the ground is wet, a cluster of 'Chocolate Ball' mounds sitting in a trough will genuinely make you smile. It's one of those quiet seasonal pleasures that reminds you why you planted it in the first place.
