Sedum spathulifolium 'Carnea'

Sedum spathulifolium 'Carnea' is a native plant — found naturally along the Pacific Coast from British Columbia down through California, including right here in Washington. It grows on rocky outcrops, cliff faces, and dry bluffs, clinging to thin soils in full sun and looking completely at home in the landscape because it literally is. The spoon-shaped leaves form flat, pruinose rosettes that carry pink and reddish tones — warmer than the classic silvery-white of some spathulifolium selections — and the yellow flowers in late spring are the same cheerful gold you'd find on a natural rocky headland.

Hardy to Zone 5 and completely adapted to PNW conditions, 'Carnea' thrives in the same rocky, well-drained, full-sun environments it evolved in. It handles dry summers without complaint — it was doing that before anyone thought to water it. Rock gardens, native plant gardens, dry stone walls, and coastal-style plantings are all natural fits. There's something particularly satisfying about growing a native plant in a cultivated setting and knowing you're giving it conditions it genuinely evolved to love. 'Carnea' is the Pacific Northwest in plant form — resilient, quietly beautiful, and completely at home on a rocky hillside under an open sky.
